A 5-piece of Blackened Tenders is about 280 calories for roughly 47g of protein. That is not a good number for a fried chicken restaurant — that is a good number full stop. It beats most protein bars, most chicken breasts you would cook at home, and every burger on this website.
The comparison that makes it land: Handcrafted Tenders, the same chicken with breading, are about 390 calories for 3 pieces. Blackened is about 170 for 3. The breading costs you 220 calories and gives you back nothing but crunch.
~170
3 pc Blackened Tenders
28g protein
~390
3 pc Handcrafted Tenders
35g protein — same chicken, breaded
~500
Added by Signature Hot sauce
on a 6 pc of wings
A 6-piece of Classic bone-in wings is about 650 calories. The same six wings in Signature Hot are about 1,150. The sauce is worth roughly 500 calories — more than a Whopper Jr., poured over your food at the last second.
The dry rubs are where the value is. Lemon pepper, garlic parmesan and buffalo rub all land near 670 — barely more than Classic — because a rub is seasoning and a glaze is sugar. Honey BBQ (~860) and Sweet & Spicy (~880) sit in between. Same wings, a 500-calorie spread, decided by one word at the counter.
A Signature Chicken breast is about 620 calories — but it also carries about 52g of protein, which is more than most steak dinners. Popeyes pieces are genuinely large; the calories are high because the portion is, not because of some trick.
A leg is about 200 and a wing about 220, so a two-piece of dark meat is a far more moderate meal than a breast. And “Mild” is now called “Classic” — Popeyes publishes Classic and Spicy with identical nutrition, so the choice there is purely about heat.
That is nearly three times the calories for one size step. The large is more than a Signature breast.
A 3.4x jump — the steepest on the menu. Mac & Cheese does something similar at 280 to 850.
About 110 calories for a regular, gravy already included. Against 270 for regular fries, it is the cheapest side on the board by a distance.
The Chicken Sandwich is about 700 calories including mayonnaise; without it, roughly 490. Over 200 calories ride on one condiment you can decline for free.
If you have looked up Popeyes calories before, some of these will look wrong. They are not. Popeyes re-tested its bone-in chicken, and the published figures moved a long way: a Signature breast went from about 380 to about 620, and a thigh from about 280 to about 490. Large Cajun fries went from about 450 to about 740.
A lot of nutrition sites — and even some of Popeyes' own ordering surfaces — still serve the old numbers. The figures here come from Popeyes' own current published nutrition guide. If you have been tracking a Popeyes breast at 380 calories, you have been undercounting by about 240.
About 700, Classic or Spicy — including the mayo, which is worth over 200 on its own (the sandwich without it is ~490). Bacon & Cheese versions are ~830.
Handcrafted: ~390 for 3 pc, ~650 for 5. Blackened (same chicken, no breading): ~170 for 3 pc, ~280 for 5. Neither includes dipping sauce.
Blackened Tenders — a 5-piece is ~280 calories for ~47g of protein, one of the best ratios in fast food. A 3-piece is ~170 for 28g.
Entirely down to sauce. A 6 pc Classic is ~650; Signature Hot is ~1,150. Dry rubs stay near 670; Honey BBQ ~860.
Popeyes re-tested its bone-in chicken and many sites still carry the old data — a breast is ~620 now, not ~380. These figures come from Popeyes' own current guide.
