This is the strangest true thing on the Panera menu. A bread bowl is filled with a cup of soup — not a bowl. So a Broccoli Cheddar bread bowl (about 930 calories) contains about 280 calories of soup and about 650 calories of bread.
Order a regular bowl instead and you get about 420 calories of soup for 420 calories total. The bread bowl costs you roughly 510 more calories and hands you less of the thing you came for. It is a lovely edible bowl. It is not a soup upgrade.

Two halves sound like one meal. In practice a You Pick Two lands between about 700 and 1,000 calories, because Panera's halves are generous and the free side is real food.
Half a Chipotle Chicken Avocado Melt is about 500. A half Caesar is about 270 — dressing included. The baguette is about 190. That is roughly 960 calories for an order that felt like a light choice at the counter, and none of it is a mistake — it is just three numbers nobody adds up.
Swapping the baguette for the apple saves about 110. Taking a cup of Chicken Noodle (about 120) as one of your two saves several hundred more.
Panera counts the dressing in its salad figures even though it usually arrives in a little cup on the side. That is why the Greek Salad reads about 630 calories with 59g of fat. Romaine, cucumber, tomato, feta and olives cannot do that on their own — the Greek dressing is roughly 48g of that fat.
The practical upside is that this is the one number you genuinely control. Because the dressing comes separately, using half of it takes a real bite out of the total — and unlike most fast-food “hacks”, this one requires nothing but restraint with a small plastic cup.

Panera lists its sandwiches and salads without the side — its own menu says “630 Cal + Side (190 Cal)”. The baguette is about 190; the apple about 80.
A bowl is about 980 calories — more than most burgers with fries. Even the You Pick Two cup is about 490, which makes it the heaviest “half” on the menu.
A Cinnamon Crunch Bagel is about 430 — more than a croissant (about 260) and more than a half sandwich. A Cinnamon Roll is about 580.
A cup of Chicken Noodle is about 120 calories. On a menu where a bread bowl is 930, that is a remarkable spread within one section.
